On World Environment Day, we mourn Canada’s plummeting reputation as stewards of the environment. Protecting our natural habitat, contributing to environmental research, our tradition of international leadership—all of this is under threat by the actions of this Conservative government.
In an attempt to silence opposition, this government is intimidating environmental advocates, muzzling scientists and defunding NGOs. With their ‘kitchen sink’ budget, Bill C-38, the Conservatives are planning to wipe out 50 years of environmental protection, signaling a dramatic policy shift from simply ignoring environmental concerns to an outright assault.
This year’s theme for World Environment Day is ‘Green Economy: Does it include you?’ I encourage all Canadians to think about what role Canada should play in next-generation energy resources for our country and for the world, and the new image that the Conservative government is creating for us. Canada can and must be a leader in sustainable energy development and work to regain the once proud role we held on the world stage. On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary caucus, I reaffirm our commitment to fighting for a healthy environment, sustainable development and a green economy.
